Shadow Folk

this is shadow folk. out of truro, nova scotia now based in halifax, i believe this is mainly a solo project (of justin mcgrath) with collaborators on the recordings. i've seen him live in truro (though only for a short bit) and it was great. he was alone with some pre-programmed sounds and his electric guitar, though sometimes just vocals. very interesting project that has a 90's alt sound (think blur/oasis/frogs) with a more spaced out psychedelic feel to it. also helps that the songs are very well recorded. do yourself a favor and check this out

WIZURD - Sux To Be Us

i recently borrowed a few tapes off a friend of mine, to listen to and digitize. he was a teen during the mid 90's music scene in truro. he had given me lots of old posters too - which will be online at some point. anyways i hadn't actually heard the band WIZURD before. i was always curious to listen to them but haven't ever come across an .mp3. you see, this cassette came out in 1997 and as i sometimes forget, there were plently of local bands from that time. the reason i forget is that the recordings are so sparse, hard to come by. alot of stuff probably is yet to be transferred. anyways people check this one out.

the MOTES

hey folks, i haven't had a scanner for a while and still don't, but yeahyeah. anyways here are some of my findings from the Sloan Net Archive 1993-1997 that relate to 'the MOTES'. hopefully i will find more local ones at some point. also included is the MOTES 1994 cassette 'Secret Air Base'. enjoy.

i am not yet fully recovered from last night's
all-ages gig in truro at, yes, the lion's club.
among the bands playing were the motes, state
champs, and preppy relatives.

this was the motes' "final" show -- they are
moving to BC and may stay there for a few months
before they come back. it was one of those loose,
silly, but great shows. they did a lot of their
best songs, including "R62", "hi fly driveway",
"the framer", "all four (required) elements", and
they ended with a sample-less version of
"understanding space rock". boy, i'm going to
miss these guys. i hope they come back soon.

after the gig, i sat down with J & jon for an
interview, and they *totally* opened up about
*everything*. no more shrouding the band in
mystery i guess. i felt like barbara freaking
walters or something. what a scoop! now i can't
wait to get the first issue of my zine out!

the gig also featured a performance piece by chris
yorke which culminated with him ripping off
various articles of clothing until he was naked
from the waist up. gordon and warren joined him
in his state of partial nudity, then he cajoled
members of the crowd to join them as well -- and a
couple of them did! anyways, nothing embarrassing
got exposed and preppy relatives did what was a
great set despite shitty sound and despite
apparently having the nuances of their aesthetic
lost on the teenage truro audience. :-)

the state champs played a rough but fun set, same
songs as what they played at the pop explosion,
with the addition of their cover of "5/8 type" by
the motes. one classic moment -- mark mullane
mocking jon dacey and andy sawler for their slow
tuning: "i guess my guitar is perfect 'cause it
never goes out of tune."

the bill was rounded out by the surprisingly good
haggis and the surprisingly bad wizurd. both were
entertaining, for different reasons...
